Genesis 42 - Joseph sees his brothers

The whole earth was going through a famine and Joseph was in charge of the food supply so it was quite natural that his family would travel to see him to ask for rations. He recognized them from afar. When they came they bowed before his feet (just as in his dream) and when they spoke used an intrepreter. Joseph understood the Hebrew tongue perfectly but he spoke back to them in the Egyptian dialect. His appearance was different. He even had a different name and held the second highest position in the land.

He returned and kept speaking to them in a stern voice and in a language he knew they would not understand, so the words were interpreted to them. He heard them speak of a younger brother at home, (his only full brother) and of their aging father. He accused them of spying and told them he did not trust them and only if they brought the other brother to him would he trust them. It was then that he heard them speak of their regrets regarding what they did to him. He quickly left their presence for a moment to compose himself as he had began to cry.

When her returned he summarized what they must do and sold them provisions and they returned home with heavy hearts knowing the grief they had given their father when they sold Joseph and told him that he was dead. Now they were going to have to ask their father to trust them with his son Benjamin.

When they stopped to rest while making their journey they found that the money was placed inside each one of their bags, then they feared they would be accused of stealing also.

Reuben told his father what Joseph had said and pledged upon his own two sons that he would guard Benjamin and return him safely. Jacob was distraught and refused to let them do such a thing.

Thank you so much for visiting me today. May God richly bless you and the reading of His word.

  1. Judy, I stop going to church since I questioned things that happens to people. I know God has his reason, and his time, but it's hard to just wait around for an answer!
